A MASTER CLASS IN SHAKESPEARE'S TEXT

Join Artist-in-Residence Brendan Norton for a two-hour workshop focused on building an actor's connection to text through voice, body, intellect, and imagination. This workshop is for the intermediate to advanced actor looking to gain a fresh perspective on classical text. Students should memorize and bring a copy of one of Shakespeare's monologues [1-2 minutes, comedy or drama, verse or prose] and, through both group and one-on-one work, access a truthful, engaging interpretation of character. Each student will receive careful, individualized attention, as well as be supportive audience members. Advance registration is required. Class size is limited to 12.

BRENDAN NORTON (Guest Artist) is thrilled to return to the Playhouse On Park stage for the third time, to play The Emcee in CABARET. Brendan is an actor, singer, improv performer, and writer with a B.A. in Theatre Performance from Fordham University at Lincoln Center, where he studied with Kristin Linklater, Dianne Wiest, and the late, great Larry Sacharow. Playhouse on Park: Antipholus/Antipholus (THE COMEDY OF ERRORS), Sir Mullet (TRAPEZIUM); 11th Hour Theatre Company: Rapunzel's Prince (INTO THE WOODS, concert); Arden Theatre Company: Dr. Fine/Madden [u/s, perf.] (NEXT TO NORMAL); EgoPo Productions: Alfred Dussel (THE DIARY OF ANNE FRANK); Bristol Riverside Theatre: Steve/Ensemble (RENT); Plays & Players Theatre: Gordon Schwinn (A NEW BRAIN), James Monroe/Ensemble (BLOODY BLOODY ANDREW JACKSON). Brendan is also a member and regular host of The N Crowd, a professional improv troupe in Olde City, Philadelphia.

Get a taste of what it is really like to be in a Broadway Musical in this 2 hour master class. Broadway veteran Susan Haefner will teach songs and dances from Broadway shows, giving everyone a chance to sing, dance and act ...all at the same time! Throughout the class, students will learn how to pick up choreography, tell a story through song and dance, and add the pop, precision and personality that makes a performance extra special, and a lot more fun! Students will have the opportunity to participate in a 30 minute question and answer session immediately following the class.

This program is for high school age students and adults with at least some musical theatre experience. Students should wear clothing appropriate for movement, and bring dance sneakers/jazz or character shoes. Advanced registration is required.

SUSAN HAEFNER (Guest Artist) Most recently, Susan has been touring the US and Canada in BILLY ELLIOT, performing various roles including Mrs. Wilkinson, Mum, Grandma, and her personal favorite, Clipboard Lady. Broadway credits include STATE FAIR, THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE and 42nd STREET. Susan also appeared in London’s West End in DAMN YANKEES with Jerry Lewis. She has performed regionally at theatres such as Milwaukee Rep, La Jolla Playhouse, Geva Theatre Center, and at Weston Playhouse in Vermont, where she has been a company member for over 20 years. Her favorite Weston appearances include MOST HAPPY FELLA (Rosabella), RAGTIME (Mother), …SPELLING BEE (Rona), KING AND I (Anna), HAIRSPRAY (Velma), and BAD DATES (Haley).

As a teacher, Susan has taught at numerous Performing Arts Schools and Theatres such as Studio New Canaan, Shuffles Tap School, Weston Playhouse, and Geva Theatre Center’s Summer Academy. Directing credits include STUART LITTLE (Weston Playhouse), YOU CAN’T TAKE IT WITH YOU (Castleton State College) and A FUNNY THING HAPPENED ON THE WAY TO THE FORUM (SUNY BROCKPORT). Susan holds a BFA degree in Musical Theatre (SUNY Fredonia) and an MFA in Acting (FSU). She is a member of Actors Equity Association.
