Meet Our 2010 Summer Interns

| Naomi Bilmes is our Literary Intern. Her primary job is to read and evaluate new plays that writers and agencies send PoP. Working with Artistic Director Sean Harris, she has recently started the Readers' Circle, a group that discusses and critiques the submissions. She also writes letters to agents and playwrights and started PoP's new blog. Naomi is from West Hartford and just finished her first year at the University of Maryland. She is majoring in English with plans to double in psychology. | David Ciano is PoP's Theatre Management Intern. His varied responsibilities include everything from marketing and promoting corporate sponsorships to researching grants that PoP can apply for to -on occasion- wielding a vaccum! David is currently a student at UCONN, majoring in theatre studies. He lives in Bristol. | Deana Croog is from West Hartford and is currently our Casting Intern, helping Artistic Director Sean Harris cast upcoming shows, posts audition notices and organizes/catagorizes incoming resumes and headshots. Deana just finished her first year at UMass Amherst, and plans to be an English major with a film minor, though she's considering marketing as well. |

| Dan Deutsch is the Marketing and Development Intern. He compiles databases, writes press releases, and generally works to "get the word out" about all that's going on at the playhouse. Dan, a West Hartford native, is a student at Clark University in Worcester, MA. As of yet, he hasn't declared a major, but he wants to be a communications major with a theatre minor and possibly a music minor as well. |
Erin Kacmarcik, from Ellington, is the Costume Intern. She assists the costume designers and acts as wardrobe mistress for the summer shows. She also helps organize and inventory costume and prop storage. Erin attends the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, PA where her field of study is theatre design / technology with a concentration in costume design. | Devin Lee is PoP's Lighting Intern. Devin works very long shifts, usually the week before a show opens. His responsibilities include hanging lights, testing them, and basically helping with anything that has to do with the construction and operation of lighting a show. Devin is from Cheshire and attends Endicott College in Beverly, MA. He's majoring in Liberal Studies with a photography concentration. |

WEST HARTFORD, CT - Playhouse on Park / Playhouse Theatre Group, Inc. is currently trying to raise $6,000 to cover the cost of its first annual Summer Internship Program. This summer, we will hire between 4 and 6 college students for a period of 10 weeks to work an average of 35 hours per week. The Playhouse Theatre Group, Inc Internship Program is a great way for young theatre professionals to learn and grow both professionally and personally. The Program allows students, graduates, and others to experience a hands-on experience. Participants work in administrative or production departments while Playhouse Theatre Group staff and artists function as mentors, guiding and instructing interns as they make the transition from student to professional. Through daily assignments and duties with a given department, professional development, volunteer opportunities, and free tickets to productions, participants are offered the chance to experience the inner workings of a professional theatre. This year, the following interns will be hired: Costume Intern, Literary Intern, Marketing Intern, Stage Manager Intern, Production Manager Intern and Development Intern. Over the course of their 10 week internship, the interns will be exposed to 4 professional productions and planning for the 2010-11 season.

ADMINISTRATIVE INTERNSHIPS
Theatre Management Internship
Theatre Management Internship provides a hands on experience within the day to day management structure of Playhouse Theatre Group, Inc. Interns work with the Executive Director and the Artistic Directors and have the opportunity to complete projects in many departments in the theatre office. Interns will also be exposed to: contract administration; theatrical unions; human resources; payroll, travel arrangements and accommodations for visiting artists. In addition the Theatre Management intern will help produce Playhouse Theatre Group’s newsletter which includes transcribing interviews with artists, writing features, editing and compiling articles, and assisting with the magazine's overall design. Candidates should posses a warm personality with strong communication, multi-tasking, and problem-solving skills, as well as a basic knowledge of Excel and all of the Microsoft applications.
Casting Internship
Casting Interns assist in the casting and hiring processes of guest artists, and professional staff. The casting intern will organize headshots, call actors and agents to schedule audition times, prepare sides and scripts for auditions and readings, complete selected reference checks, and may act as the reader for most local Playhouse Theatre Group auditions. They are also responsible for the upkeep of actor and guest artist databases. Candidates should possess strong communication and organizational skills, and a desire to learn more about the world of casting. Other Front of House support is assigned as needed.
Literary Internship
Literary Intern’s duties include reading new plays and writing evaluations, reviewing script submissions, maintaining the database and script library, preparing dramaturgical packets and researching dramaturgical questions for productions. The Literary intern will prepare packets of plays for the volunteer Reader’s Circle and correspondence with readers. The Literary intern will also assist the artistic staff with the preparation of letters to playwrights and agents, and writing articles for the theatre newsletter. Literary interns also support the theatre in secondary duties, which may include House Management or other Front of House or running crew responsibilities.
Development Internship
The Development Internship provides a broad exposure to Playhouse Theatre Group, Inc.’s fundraising program that builds strong relationships with our donors. Interns will have an opportunity to learn about corporate sponsorship, foundation and government grant proposals, event planning, donor database management, prospect research, individual donor solicitations, email and online donor communications. Candidates should have excellent computer and writing skills, be highly organized and able to multi–task, and have the desire to be part of a great development team.
Marketing Internship
Marketing interns are given a high level of responsibility and work closely with the staff to develop new audiences, maintain and develop the Playhouse Theatre Group’s websites and create promotional relationships with area restaurants and media outlets. Through attendance in meetings with the artistic staff and access to production run-throughs, interns are exposed to the artistic process and learn how to effectively market Playhouse Theatre Group’s shows to a diverse audience. Interns also assist with audience research, special events, group sales, direct mail and subscription campaigns. The ideal candidate will have excellent organizational and computer skills, thrive in a fast-paced, independent environment and have the desire to work with an enthusiastic and creative team.
PRODUCTION INTERNSHIPS
Stage Management Internship
Stage Management Interns will assist in rehearsals and running shows under the Stage Manager’s supervision. Playhouse Theatre Group, Inc. produces numerous shows every year and the Stage Management intern will Assistant stage manage rehearsals and show runs. They will keep stage management schedule and paper work, attend production meetings, work closely with actors and director, and lead and help show run crews.
Costume Internship
Costume Interns will assist the professional costume designer and costume shop manager, interact with directors and actors to help the show run smoothly, run wardrobe, pull, shop, and/or rent costume pieces and accessories, assist in fitting and alteration of costumes, and some costume construction, maintenance and other support.
Lighting Internship
Lighting Interns will work with the Master Electrician on maintaining lighting inventory, reading the light plot, and ordering and organization of lighting rental. The intern will assist on hang and focus up-coming shows, and be responsible for running the light board during show runs. Some special projects may be assigned.
Sound Internship
The Sound Intern will work with the professional sound designer both before and for the duration the show, have the opportunity to learn and operate the sound console during production, work with the production team on locating and creating sound cues for production. Some special support or assignments may be assigned.
Scenic Construction Internship
The Scenic Construction Intern will work directly with the TD and designers in the execution of the set design, assist in set construction, assist in scenic painting. Take part in the strike and load-in of each production and assist the show running and maintenance.
INTERN REQUIREMENTS
All applicants must be 18 years of age and must complete all required paperwork to be considered.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Does Playhouse Theatre Group offer internships in exchange for college credit?
Yes. Internship programs are available in exchange for school credit. Each program in unique based upon the relationship between the school and Playhouse Theatre Group Inc. Please check to see if we are on your school’s approved list of Internships. These internships are unpaid.
How can a college or university become involved in Playhouse Theatre Group’s Internship Program?

Does Playhouse Theatre Group offer paid internships?
Yes. Interns not receiving college credit will receive a stipend of $100/ wk plus one meal per day.
Will I be able hold a job during the program?
If hired, you would be required to work between 30 - 40 hours a week per week. Many interns have been able to find additional work that doesn’t conflict with their internship requirements and schedule.
Does Playhouse internships provide housing?
Currently, No - Rental properties are prolific and vary in price. Single apartments can range upwards of $550/mo. Living with roommates can be a much cheaper alternative. For roommate and apartment listings, Craig's List is a great resource.
Are high school students or adults exploring new career paths eligible to apply for an internship?
All participants must be 18 years of age. High school students should consider volunteering. Adults exploring new career paths in arts administration and production are more than welcome to apply.
